Reconciliation Action Plans (RAP)

These were successful due to understanding history, traditions, culture and the associated protocols.

Additionally respect, dignity, education, lateral thinking and honest multilevel communication:

Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN)

Scenario:

  • ACCAN undertook to create their inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan additionally they also wanted guidance to create lasting relationships within the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Communities.

Solution:

  • Provided guidance on cultural content and context on their creation of their inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) at RAP steering committee meetings.
  • The CEO was invited to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Community events and local organisations to begin establish relationships. Including strategic introductions to Elders and community members both from the local community and beyond after demonstrating respect, truth, dignity, honor, trust, collaboration and shared outcomes

Allen Consulting Group

Scenario:

  • Allen Consulting Group was in the final stages of creating their inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) driven by staff at all levels from within their organisation and they engaged Guwaali to do an external review and provide feedback prior to final submission and approval by Allen Consulting Group board and Reconciliation Australia and then the sequent launch.

Solution:

  • Guwaali provide feedback on cultural content and context as required including suggesting procurement to be considered due to emerging Indigenous business sector, if not in this version then in later Reconciliation Action Plans.
  • Additionally it was suggested the first multi-site teleconference launch (Melbourne, Sydney & Canberra), which would have common core components through the launch, but each site would break after a small introduction to their own local ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony proved by the appropriate local community members. Guwaali helped facilitate this by providing Cultural protocols guidance and introductions into the local Aboriginal Elders and communities where the sites were located in Melbourne, Sydney & Canberra. We had the first multi-site Reconciliation Action Plan launch (Melbourne & Sydney) unfortunately Canberra was delayed due to site issues.

Sydney Opera House

Scenario:

  • Sydney Opera House was in the later stages of creating their Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). They engaged Guwaali to do an external review and provide feedback prior to final submission and approval by Board and Reconciliation Australia and then the sequent launch.

Solution:

  • Guwaali provide feedback on cultural content and context as required including suggesting procurement to be considered due to emerging Indigenous business sector, if not in this version then in later Reconciliation Action Plan.

Interrelate

Scenario:

  • Interrelate Family Centres undertook to create their inaugural Reconciliation Action Plan.

Solution:

  • Guwaali guided Interrelate through all stages of the development process commencing with initial consideration with senior management. The development process was carried out by a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) working group consisting of key members within the organisation consulting with Guwaali. Guwaali commended Interrelate for setting realistic goals, while documenting and incorporating in the RAP established achievements that were well embedded in the organisation and to use them as a foundation to build on.

PricewaterhouseCoopers

Scenario:

  • PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) Sydney office was launching their 2nd Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). They had not gained traction within the Sydney office as desired on reconciliation and the 1st RAP; secondly they wanted to establish relationships with the local Aboriginal community of Sydney.

Solution:

  • Guwaali recommended a Reconciliation Art Project. With capacity building of local emerging student artists as one of the core outcomes, including, value adding to the artists portfolios, arranging intellectual property & artistic rights talks, introduction into, and the sharing of stories between two different worlds, empowering the artists communications skills, so they had the confidence instructing and educating their assigned PwC staff member, not only art, but history, culture and traditions. This ran in the foyer as catalyst for engaging both staff & clients by Artists and the Sydney RAP team.
  • A wonderful byproduct of the project was a PwC employee self-identified as they felt safe to do so.
